Last night was very likely the last show I’ll ever see at Sin-e and I can’t think of a better way to remember it.
If I had to take an out of towner to see a single band and show them what the New York City music scene is all about, I’d take them to see Other Passengers. OP have been that local band I’ve been following since the very beginning. I can’t even count the numerous times I’ve seen them play at various venues across the city since their humble beginnings as Medicine Hat. The band’s live show has always been their strong point, loud and chaotic, OP spews sonic shockwaves from the stage. On stage, frontman Billy Jones undergoes a sort of transformation from his off-stage self, into another zone getting this nearly paranoid look on his face while belting out hallucinated vocals. SO much passion goes into their live show and it just keeps getting better.
Die Romantik, WOW, these guys were fucking tight! I left last night bewildered why it’s taken me so long to see this Brooklyn three-piece and become a fan of their music. Drawing their name from a 19th century German compilation of romantic classical composers, Die Romantik is just that, a blend of classical and romantic moody pop music. The highlight of their set last night, were the soaring vocals of guitarist Olivier Bernard, their sound is both fresh and timeless. Check out three tracks from their album Narcissist’s Waltz due out in mid-May.
Also, check out Other Passengers video for “Sick Sick” which was shot by underground Chicago film maker Graham Baclagon.
