Land
Land of Talk’s Elizabeth Powell has often been compared to P.J. Harvey and Chan Marshall of Cat Power…but what this trio from Montreal really sounds like is a “big” band. Their songs are definitely guitar driven - they fuzz, they swirl, and they have up-tempo choruses that would sound good in stadiums. Land of Talk will probably be pretty popular, as I can see their music appealing to a lot of different types of people…they’re just another reason Toronto is right now thinking: “Montreal must be stopped!” [Oh My Rockness]

Mahogany
“Bossa beats and one chord ethereal guitar loops never sounded so imaginative, Mahogany are one of the most underrated and criminally overlooked bands of the last decade. Some of the most creative, imaginative and breath-taking music you’ll have ever had the fortune of hearing. Don’t let this remarkable band go unnoticed any longer.” [Angryape]

Mahogany  ”My Bed Is My Castle”

Vampire
Vampire Weekend, a quartet of Columbia kids, offer up damn-near perfect pop tunes …with an endearing sincerity we can only hope survives a rocket to stardom. But don’t mistake their earnest ‘tudes for naïveté; the boys write beyond their years, with pointed, often sardonic commentary soaring over ebullient keys in sing-a-long verse.” [Flavorpill]

Balun1
Balún’s debut CD is a swirling mix of lo-fi electronics and old-school instruments that puts to rest the idea that all indie electronic music sounds the same. Indeed unlike many bands who could be called indie electronic, the trio from San Juan fully integrates the electronics involved so that many of their songs would sound right at home on an Artificial Intelligence compilation or on a mix next to Aphex Twin, Modest Mouse, and Plone. To put it another way, the electronic songs on the album sound like they could be pop songs, while the indie pop songs sound like they could be techno instrumentals. Not too many groups have been able to pull this feat off with much success but Balún makes it look easy.” [All Music]
